There are some kids who are quite comfortable around medical professionals. They have no problems with doctor appointments and volunteering on laboratory tests. But there are kids who find it really hard to be around doctors. The mere mention of a doctor’s visit would bring them to tears or send them anxious or petrified to their rooms.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can still help your little one to feel less anxious around medical professionals. Here are some sure ways to help them be more cooperative during their appointments:

  1. Role play at home

Most kids grew up learning about doctors on the day of their first appointment. Naturally, they would feel anxious with a stranger who they don’t know, much more with someone who will be doing tests and exams on them. This could lead to irrational fears and phobias. Be sure to let your kid know about the appointment and what will about to happen. Simulate if you have to so you can put your kid at ease.

  1. Listen to your kid

Sometimes, parents are so keen on bringing their kids to the hospital that they force them to attend their appointment. What’s missing in this scenario is the communication. Forcing your kid to go without hearing his/her concerns would only make things worse. Try to pacify your child by asking him/her about his/her fears. Validate them and give them a simple rundown of what is going to happen inside the doctor’s office. Try to make it a simple and less scary as possible.

  1. Make him comfortable

When you are in the doctor’s office, hold your kid close all throughout the checkup. Being close and in the same room as your kid would make them feel safe and secure. But do not make this a habit. You need to distance yourself from your kid little by little in the next appointments. This would help them to be more at ease with their pediatrician in the long run.

  1. Bring a security blanket

If your kid has a favorite toy or blanket, be sure to bring it with you on your kid’s checkup. The mere presence of their favorite plush toy or blankie is an added emotional security for them. It can calm their nerves and they will have something to hold to during the scary part.

  1. Choose the right pediatrician

Most importantly, you need to pick the right doctor for your children. More than the skills, he/she should have the ability to understand your kids’ emotional stability and has a way to handle cases like this.
